The Montana Society of the Sons of the American Revolution ogranized in June of 1894 at Helena, but not until 1972 was there an interest in forming local chapters. The first chapter, Sourdough, formed at Bozeman that year. In 1987, several compatriots residing in Great Falls took it upon themselves to recruit more local members and establish a chapter in this city. The name Portage was chosen in honor of Revolutionary War veterans Meriwether Lews and William Clark. During the Corps of Discovery, now known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the veterans and their comrades traveled up the Missouri River but when they arrived at present day Great Falls, Montana, the corps was forced to disembark from their canoes and to carry them or portage them around the five great falls located on the Missouri.
Since our inception, Portage members have worked hard to be active in the community. Past activities have included honoring Eagle Scouts and outstanding citizens, participating in 4th of July Parades and working with local schools. Our membership is diverse in age, location and occutpations from young members just starting out, to farmers and ranchers, to retirees. Some of our members reside as far south as Helena, as far east as Havre, other surrounding communities and even out of state. |
